Fertility Food - Avocado

Did you know that avocado (often referred to as the 'fruit of the womb' can help aid in fertility?

My mom loves Dr. Oz. I mean like she watches his show faithfully.  So much so that she keeps a notebook handy to write down tips that he shares and she passes those tips along to others. We talk often and during one of our many conversations, she says "do you like avocado?".  She continues to explain that avocado can help aid in fertility.  So I did a little digging and found some great sources online to support her "findings".

Here’s why avocados are so fertility friendly: First, they’re packed with folic acid, a type of B vitamin that helps boost fertility in both men and women. Folic acid also helps prevent neural tube defects at birth. You want to get lotsof folate.

Second, they’re high in monounsaturated fat. That’s the good, healthy kind of fat, the type that helps lower cholesterol. Fat plays a very important role in our endocrine system, which regulates the hormones involved in reproduction. Estrogen, for example, is manufactured and stored in fat, so you want to get your fat in, just make it the healthy kind, which is the mono- and poly-unsaturated varieties. 

Finally, avocados contain good enzymes which aid digestion and, when you’re trying to conceive, anything you do to lessen the impact on digestion helps! 

Avocados are also high in fiber, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, and are filled with other great nutrients, such as potassium, vitamin B6 and vitamin C.

So if you're like me and you're ready to start your family, eating healthy helps especially eating the right foods.  So guess what I had for dinner yesterday? A salad topped with avocado.  I plan on adding one avocado a week to my diet.
